Chinese Art III: Textiles, Glass and Painting on Glass, Carvings in Ivory and Rhinoceros Horn, Carvings in Hardstones, Snuff Bottles Inkcakes and Inkstones
Authors: Soame Jenyns and William Watson
Publisher: Rizzoli, New York, 1982
Description: The decorative crafts in China were an essential element in the unbroken tradition of technical and designing skills which sustained fine art in its most developed forms through three millennia of Chinese history. Throughout this book, the author puts us in touch with the quintesential aspects of Chinese taste. His chapter on textiles covers the whole development of this craft from the Shang dynasty onwards. That on glass and painting on glass is a pioneering account of a type of craft little known to the West. In writing about carvings in ivory and rhinoceros horn he deals expertly with a subject which, of all those he handles, is probably the most familaiar to the West and held in the greatest affection. Among other areas covered in detail are snuff bottles and inkstones. The outstanding skill and sensitivity manifested in the works of these artists are a source of constant delight. The illustrations in color and monochrome reveal the exquisitely fine workmanship in the textiles, the rich and subtle colors of the carvings. These superb examples of Chinese artworks are from museums and private collections in the United States and Europe, and the Far East. This third and final book of a comprehensive series on the many-sided facets of Chinese art and artisanship throughout the centuries comnpletes a detailed study of minor or decorative Chinese arts in which Mr. Jenyns shows the development and meaning of the artistry and craftsmanship of Chinese masterworks.

Author: Robert L. Thorp
Introductory Essay by Yang Xiaoneng
Organized by the Chinese Overseas Archaeological Exhibition Corporation
Publisher: Son of Heaven Press, Seattle 1988 (first edition)
The official publicationof the exhibition Son of Heaven: Imperial Arts of China, Seattle July-December, 1988 and Columbus March-August, 1989.
Description: This book was sold as a companion guide and souvenir at the Son of Heaven: Imperial Arts of China exhibition that toured the United States in the late 1980's. Items produced by the Chinese imperial workshops were gathered from all over China into this one show. You'll never view all these pieces together in one place again. The photographs are exquisite, featuring some of the best items from the exhibit. The text gives brief overviews of various aspects of life inside the Imperial Court of China, arranged by "rooms" for each broad subject. Most of the items in this book were made specifically for the Chinese Imperial Court and are, thus, examples of the highest quality of craftsmanship at the time of their creation. Not to be missed are the Jade and Gold Belt, and the Emperor's Dragon Robe. Both are examples of the intricacy and incredible skill that went into making items for the Son of Heaven.

Publisher: Weatherhill, Inc., New York and Tokyo, 1997 (first edition)
Soft cover: 166 pages, 165 colour illustrations, glossary and index.
Description: Treasures of the Chinese Scholar presents the most detailed and illuminating commentary on the objects of the Chinese scholar's studio available in English. These treasures of the Chinese scholar's studio—including brushes, inkstones, water droppers, toggles, figurines, and scholar's rocks—represent the pinnacle of a complex art, which, having been refined over thousands of years by Chinese artisans, came to embody the highest degree of technical precision and a finely honed aesthetic sensibility. Through an understanding of the materials and motifs with which these objects were so artfully crafted and embellished, one can gain profound insight into the classical Chinese civilization, while the pieces themselves stand alone brilliantly as objects of aesthetic interest. This book examines in detail the form, function, and symbolism of some of the finest scholar objects extant, primarily from the Ming and Qing dynasties and spanning five hundred years of continuous craftsmanship.
