#0473038366 Allen’s Introduction to Later Chinese Porcelain $95
Allen’s Introduction to Later Chinese Porcelain
Author: Anthony J. Allen
Publisher: Allen’s Enterprises Ltd., Auckland 1996 (first edition)
Description: Chinese porcelain of the period 1820 through 1920 has, to date, been the province of a minority of academic authors and a few adventurous dealers and collectors. This misunderstood but fascinating field of study is now brought within the reach of the average collector. Written with the interests of novice collectors and dealers in mind, superbly illustrated in colour throughout, each of the introductory chapters conclude with suggestions for further reading, and thus provide a fast but solid grounding for the primary focus of the book: dating of later Chinese porcelains. This book discusses marks, reign marks, footrims, glazes, bubbles, flaws and imperfections, and other indications of a date of manufacture, including the contentious subjects of hollow line and the reversed S; illustrating in close-up images many of the features used by the author to substantiate his assertions. Unashamedly provocative, Allen concludes with chapters on those subjects most earlier writers treated as taboo, including Modern Fakes and their Detection, Buying Trips in Asia, and Recommendations for Investors.

#1588860167 Blanc De Chine: Porcelain from Dehua $450
Blanc De Chine: Porcelain from Dehua
A catalogue of the Hickley Collection, Singapore
Authors: Rose Kerr and John Ayers
Publisher: Art Media Resources, Ltd., Chicago 2002 (first edition)
Description: Dehua porcelain or Blanc de Chine as it is known to the West, is pure ivory-white porcelain made at the Dehua kilns in the Southern Chinese province of Fujian. It rose to international significance around the 17th century and inspired aristocratic patronage in the development of European porcelain, Its popularity at home and abroad continued and the kilns at Dehua remain prolific to this day. This is the first comprehensive publication since P.J. Donnelly's pioneering study Blanc de Chine: The Porcelain of Tehua in Fukien, published 30 years ago. Since then research has produced new data on its obscure origins and popular appeal, which will intrigue scholars and general readers alike. The collection donated to the Asian Civilisations Museum in Singapore, by Frank and Pamela Hickley, reflects their dedication to collecting Dehua porcelain over the past 30 years. It comprises more than 160 pieces, including a wide range of shapes and rare as well as popular pieces, dating from as early as the Song dynasty. This eclecticism and the provenance of many pieces, for example from the private collections of Edward T. Chow, P.J. Donelly and Dr. Ip Yee, provide a valuable scholastic resource and a rival to collections around the world.

#0728602652 Earth, Fire and Water: Chinese Ceramic Technology $70
Earth, Fire and Water: Chinese Ceramic Technology
A Handbook for Non-specialists
Author: Stacey Pierson
Description: Written to accompany an exhibition of the same name at the Percival David Foundation of Chinese Art in 1996, this text is designed to explain the basic science involved in ceramic manufacture, with reference to Chinese ceramics, as they are the most technologically advanced. Both the exhibition and the book were inspired by many requests for basic information about ceramic technology that did not require experience of making pots or a degree in chemistry to understand. The book thus assumes no previous knowledge of ceramic technology or science in general and uses terms which can be defined and explained in a manner accessible to the non-specialist.

#981003721X Elegant Form and Harmonious Decoration: Four Dynasties of Jingdezhen Porcelain $110
Elegant Form and Harmonious Decoration: Four Dynasties of Jingdezhen Porcelain
Anniversary Exhibition 10 June - 10 September 1992 Percival David Foundation of Chinese Art London. A Joint Exhibition from the Collections of the Percival David Foundation and CP Lin.
Author: Rosemary E Scott
Publisher: Sun Tree Publishing Ltd., London 1992 (first edition)
Description: “The year 1992 is very significant for the Percival David Foundation of Chinese Art. Not only does it mark the 100th anniversary of the birth of Sir Percival David, but it was also 40 years ago on 10th June 1952 that the Foundation opened to the public. We are celebrating these anniversaries in two ways. In view of all recent archaeological discoveries made at the site of the Imperial kiln at Jingdezhen, we are holding a colloquy on the subject of the Porcelains of Jingdezhen. We are also mounting the current exhibition Elegant Form and Harmonious Decoration – Four Dynasties of Jingdezhen Porcelains, in the Foundation’s Lady David Gallery. We are particularly grateful to Mr C P Lin for his great generosity in lending so many of his own beautiful and rare pieces to this exhibition. It seems entirely fitting in this anniversary year that the Foundation should be mounting a joint exhibition with Mr C P Lin whose collecting is marked by a deep appreciation not only of the outstanding aesthetic qualities of Chinese porcelains, but also their great scholarly interest. This too was the approach taken by Sir Percival David, who taught himself to read the Chinese language specifically to facilitate his study of the vast body of literature written by Chinese scholars. It is significant too that the ceramic collections of both Mr C P Lin and Sir Percival David predominantly contain fine Imperial wares, and it is these porcelains reflecting as they do the tastes and interests of the Chinese court that form the major part of the current exhibition.” excerpt from the preface by M D MacWilliam, Director, School of Oriental Studies University of London, June, 1992.
