UH30102 Large Japanese Togatta Kokeshi, Miyagi prefecture, by Sato Fumio (1923-1986), a long narrow columnar body, tapering at the shoulder, oversized rectangular globular head (zudai kokeshi), (tegara) red chrysanthemum painting on the top of the head, with the facial features with arched double lidded open eyes, (neko-bana) "U" nose, and hair depicted in black surround by radial red petal lines around the hairline, the body decorated in bands top and bottom and a set of five red stacked blossoms (kasanegiku) on the shaft. Ink signature on the base "Fumio" and a gift inscription on the back with a open peony blossom. Minor signs of wear otherwise fine condition. 18" high x 4-3/4" in diameter. 20th century.
