UH30108 Large Japanese Sosaku Kokeshi, Fukushima prefecture, a concave columnar body carved of birch with the bark remaining, hard shoulder, domed neck, globular head, the face painted with three bangs tied with a red mizuhike into a pony tail, blue eyebrows, black half moon eyes, white dot nose and triangular red dot mouth, the concave portion of the body painted with a landscape scene of two peaked mountains and trees in the foreground, calligraphic inscription above of a Fukushima folk song, to the side identifying the scene as Bandai Kogen (Bandai Highlands). A split to the back of the head and minor splits to the unmarked base, black surface mars to the head and other signs of wear otherwise good condition. 17-3/4" high x 4-1/4" in diameter. 20th Century.
