UH30140 Japanese Sosaku Kokeshi, Gunma prefecture, by Satou Suigai (b. 1926), winner of the all Japan Kokeshi competition in 1958 and 1966, a columnar waisted body with tapering base, separate neck and hard shoulder, globular head with top knot finial (evidence of point of attachment for a separate hair pin (missing) painted with short front and long side bangs, line eyes, arched eyebrows and small red lips, the body decorated in silver sprays of grasses and gold obi having a red square design. Ink signature on the side as well as the base "Suigai". Dent on the front obi and loss of the hair pin otherwise fine condition. 10" high x 2-3/4" in diameter. 20th Century.
