CHINESE 10-PANEL “SCHOLARS IN A GARDEN” PAINTED SCREEN, 19TH CENTURY
Chinese 10-panel screen, ink and colors on paper backed silk, depicting a continuous garden scene of rock formations and a variety of plants with vignettes of scholars, attendants and animals. The scholars are engaged in learned pursuits outdoors practicing meditation, music, writing, painting and reading. The mounting is on a thin wood framework of ten panels with later silk overlays constituting the border.
Measuring: 70” x 12’-6”, Folded 70” x 15” x 4-1/2”
Age: 19th Century.
Condition: Old restorations of losses that appear in each panel near the vertical edges, linear vertical evidence of water spots on five of the ten panels, other minor water spots and stains, the thin paper hinges weak, some torn, otherwise good condition.
