UH30153 A rare Vietnamese Buddhist “Tuong Thich Ca so sinh, go son son thep vang”, Statue of Newly born Sakyamuni, crimsoned and gilded wood, standing on a lotus base, wearing diaphanous robes gathered at the waist and bare on his right shoulder, right hand pointing down to earth and the left hand upright at the chin pointing towards heaven. The separate nimbus that surrounds him is crowned with a protective celestial dragon and forms a garland of clouds and flowers, symbolizing the tradition that at birth, the rejoicing gods let fall a rain of flowers from the heights of the celestial domain, all affixed to the original square waisted base. Idiosyncratic traditional lacquer technique of mixing powdered gold into red tinted lacquer. Dragon’s eyes inlaid in ivory and horn. Old French descriptive label on the base. 22” high x 9-3/4” wide x 6-3/4” deep. 18th century.
