Antique Japanese Takeda Ningyo Doll Set of two kabuki actors on the stage. Each figure with a wide stance turning to look at one another. The figures are costumed in silks, kinran brocades and birodo velvet, one with long trousers, chirimen sleeves embroidered in a bamboo fence design carrying two swords at the hip and a stick in his right hand, the other in robes, the outer birodo robe dyed iron black with subsequent deterioration couched with dynamic swirl design and some sort of stage prop in the foreground. The heads are carved of wood covered in gofun with insets for the hair and detailed painted features expressing the kabuki “mie” expression. All standing on a traditional Takeda-style black lacquered wood stage with cutout front panel backed with fabric.
Signs of age, deterioration of black birodo textile revealing the wire, paper and cotton underside, otherwise fine condition.
