Antique Turkmen Tekke “Princess Bokhara” Hatchli Prayer Rug / Door Hanging (Ensi), Afghanistan

A fine natural dyed wool in a dense Persian knot in thick pile on an an all wool foundation. A traditional directional Hatchli design of a repeat candlestick pattern in deep blue on a red field quartered to contain a cross on center with Bovrek “C” shapes. This center square is framed by a border of double crosses and a peaked roof design on top. The surround is a herringbone tree pattern repeat, with door frame white Shinak border. The bottom skirt panel is composed of a floral blossom repeat on a brown field.

A Princess Bokhara is a term coined by Western dealers in the 19th century to signify the superior quality of Oriental Carpets hand-knotted by the Tekke in this specific directional design used as both a door hanging and a prayer rug. This piece is a solid example of style and quality for this type of collector’s rug. Two labels on backside.

Condition: Restored, one rewoven patch in the bottom panel, ends complete with short fringe, the edges complete with deep blue wool double re-wrap.
