MILO BAUGHMAN (1923-2003), a pioneer in modern design, known as a leading modern furniture designer of the second half of the 20th century. Baughman a native Californian, designed for Thayer Coggin starting in 1953 designing the first lines for a collection of related upholstered groups. For 50 years they collaborated on designs, engineering and manufacturing techniques that came to define the mid-century modern era of American residential furniture. Baughman's uniquely American designs are forward-thinking, trend-setting and distinctive. The relaxed and timeless quality of his furniture has created a ready and consistent response, and his highly influential work continues to be collected and reinvented and revived by designers around the world. Paramount to Baughman's design philosophy was that good design is enduring design. He achieved an aesthetic of characteristic restraint, that is uncompromisingly modern, but which never violates the timeless standards of classic good taste, using Modern quality materials, such as his favored Brazilian Rosewood veneers. Milo Baughman's work was included in "High Styles: Twentieth Century American Design" at the Whitney Museum of American Art and in 1987, he was inducted into the Furniture Hall of Fame.
