Haruhiko Shimoo. Born in Takaoka City in 1939. An Industrial Designer exhibiting at Alpha Gallery and Kyoto Craft Gallery. Her works are copper based bronzes cast in the lost wax method. “My Works are mainly real, rapid change and diversification of values like modern times. Among them, it makes me think, ‘What is Realism?’. I think that it is possible to reflect the review of realism that changes with the passage of time in the three-dimensional prototype so that realistic academic expressions are not necessarily real.”

UH80158: One Lot of Vintage Japanese Somayaki Tea Cups

One Lot of Vintage Japanese Somayaki tea cups, Soma, Fukushima Prefecture

details
UH80158
One Lot of Vintage Japanese Somayaki tea cups, Soma, Fukushima Prefecture. An assembled set consisting of 21 insulated tea cups, 1 saucer, sugar bowl (with lid) and 1 ashtray. Somayaki crackle glazed pottery dates back as far as 1690 and the height of production grew to around 100 kilns in Fukushima prefecture. The pottery is identified by the double-wall construction of the cups to retain heat and the exterior pierced surface wall to be cool to the  touch. These cups have a beautiful celadon “Aohibi” glaze with significant inked crazing over all and dark underglaze wash with wavy sgraffito on the lower half of the exterior wall. Many pieces feature supplemental cold gilt painted rim, outlining of the flower petal “Hanauki” shaped exterior wall cutouts and a galloping horse “Hashirigoma” on the bottom inside of the cup which was an emblem of the Feudal Soma clan and a trademark of this type of pottery. The underside of the base of the cup has “JAPAN” stamped faintly on it in compliance for export. A popular item abroad in the 1950’s known as “Double Cup”. In 1978 the Ministry of International Trade and Industry designated Somayaki as an official traditional craft as a national treasure. These cups vary in size and volume providing a pleasing  array of a collection.

NH22053: Keshi-bina Ministers

Antique Japanese Pair of Keshi-bina Ministers

details
NH22053
Antique Japanese Pair of Keshi-bina Ministers. A hyper miniaturized pair for the Hina Matsuri Display for Girl’s Day in Japan. Traditionally a pair of ministers,  known as Udaijin and Sadaijin, ministers of left and right is displayed with the lord and lady on display. This size is classified as poppy seed referring to the size of the heads. Even though the term is not accurate in size, it is accurate in the idea of miniature, much like keshi pearls. Sumptuary laws in Japan in the Edo period restricted size and the marketplace reacted in an extreme way by producing the smallest size possible. Each male figure seated on a stump with a broad stance holding bows, costumed in formal attire, all supported on a fabric over wood square base. The heads and hats are carved as one out of wood covered in gofun and painted features. One figure in purple holds an arrow in his right hand. The other figure is in orange costume with three arrows on his back.
Signs of age and wear, otherwise fine condition.
Each figure measures 3-1/8 in. high x 2 in. Square (8 x 5 x 5cm).
