Japanese Mitsuore Katsuragae Doll by Namikawa, rare doll form, with joints at hips, knees, and ankles allowing the doll to positioned in  a kneeling, sitting or standing position, complete with a set of six interchangeable wigs with  5 stands, each wig in elaborate coiffure with hair ornaments, doll itself of wood covered in a fine gofun, features finely carved and painted with inset glass eyes in half moon shape, painted lashes, slightly parted lips, defined teeth wearing a beautiful hand painted purple silk crepe kimono with a pattern of blossoms, bound with a fawn-spot tie-dyed red and white silk obi. Namikawa was an important Meiji Period doll maker known for his wigs and ke-ui-saku technique “fine hair planting” on animal dolls. Original box.
Doll: 18 in. high.

Japanese Karako Ningyo, an amusing figural representation of a young Chinese entertainer beating a handheld drum, in a seated posture with legs extended forward, the head and hands covered in gofun with painted features depicting an amused expression with narrow eyes and the inset hair tied into two knots in the front covered in cloth in a Chinese boy hair style, costumed in sumptuous kinran brocades and chirimen trousers also in Chinese style.
Minor signs of wear and fading otherwise fine condition.
11 inches high.
Edo period, circa 1800.

Japanese Mitsuore ningyo of a girl, a jointed costume doll crafted of wood and covered in multiple layers of burnished gofun, made to stand as well as kneel, fabric and wire upper arms to facilitate costuming, a beautiful modeled face with open mouth displaying teeth and tongue, glass inset eyes and silk hair, jointed at the neck, hip and knees.
Minor gofun restorations, otherwise fine condition. New Kimono.

Japanese Hagoita (battledore), a decorated display baton for shuttlecock, crafted of a thick piece of kiri (Paulownia) painted on one side of waves, pine boughs and cloud, the backside in relief fabric application in a raised design of the female folk tale character Murasame, the brine bearer dressed in kimono and tall gold cap carrying a water bucket free standing and attached with four red cords.
Minor signs of wear otherwise fine condition.

Antique Japanese Isho-Ningyo of a Samurai out on the town, a standing figure of a man dressed in a blue kasuri patterned kamishimo over layered kimono and a long sword at the hip. The legs, hands and head carved of wood covered in burnished gofun with painted features including the topknot hairstyle. The feet pegged to a square block of wood serving as the stand.
Evidence of restoration to the feet and legs, straw sandals missing, cracks to the gofun near the topknot, signs of age and wear, otherwise good condition.
